Invocation
I meditate on Lord Vishnu, who is clad in white garments, who is all‑pervading, who has a moon‑like complexion, who has four arms, and who has a serene, smiling face. May He remove all obstacles.
Yudhishthira’s Questions
Yudhishthira asks Bhishma:
- Who is the greatest Lord in the world?
- Who is the one refuge for all?
- By praising whom can a person attain supreme good?
- By worshipping whom can one be freed from the cycle of birth and death?
Bhishma’s Answer
Bhishma replies that the Supreme Lord is Vishnu. He is the highest, the greatest, the eternal refuge of all beings. By praising and worshipping Him, a person attains peace, prosperity, and liberation.
Essence of the Thousand Names
The thousand names describe Vishnu as:
- The creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the universe
- The soul within all beings
- The one beyond time, space, and change
- The protector of dharma (righteousness)
- The giver of knowledge, wealth, strength, and liberation
- The one who takes many forms to protect devotees and restore balance
Each name reveals a different aspect of His nature—compassion, power, wisdom, beauty, and His presence in everything.
Phala Shruti (Benefits of Reciting)
Bhishma explains that whoever recites these names with devotion and faith:
- Is freed from fear, sorrow, and sin
- Gains peace of mind and inner strength
- Is protected from difficulties and obstacles
- Moves closer to liberation (moksha)
Reciting Vishnu Sahasranamam is said to remove anxiety and negativity, bring clarity, devotion, and contentment, and bless one’s family, home, and life with auspiciousness.
